Celebrating 50+ Years of the National Community Development Association: A Reflection on Mentorship and Lifelong Connections

Last week, I had the privilege of attending the Spring Conference organized by the National Community Development Association (NCDA) Region 1. Little did I know that this conference would be an extraordinary opportunity to reflect on the profound impact this organization has had on my career and the lasting connections I've formed through its dedicated members and staff.

Throughout my professional journey, I've been fortunate to encounter numerous mentors who have generously shared their wisdom and guidance, shaping me into the person I am today. The NCDA has been instrumental in fostering these mentorship relationships, providing a platform for seasoned professionals to impart their knowledge to younger generations.

At the conference, the Region 1 Chair, Tyler Fairbairn, took a moment to recognize his former boss, Alanna Kabel,  with a Lifetime Achievement Award. This heartfelt gesture highlighted the importance of mentorship and demonstrated how the NCDA has created a supportive environment for nurturing and honoring these relationships.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the spring Region 1 conference was the heartfelt dedication to honor a remarkable past member of the National Community Development Association (NCDA). Mark Tigan and Pat Sullivan, two towering figures in the community development field, stepped onto the stage to present the dedication. Their physical presence and shared history with the honoree lent an air of reverence to the moment.

Mark Tigan, standing tall with his arms raised high, captivatingly expressed how the honoree, Ned Handy, had metaphorically spread his wings wide to take Pat and Mark under his nurturing guidance. This visual representation of Ned's mentorship had a profound impact on the audience, underscoring the immense influence one person can have in shaping the lives and careers of others. It was as if the very essence of mentorship was encapsulated in that grand gesture, symbolizing the willingness to lift others, support them, and provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to soar.

As the applause filled the conference hall, it was clear that Ned Handy's legacy would continue to inspire and influence countless professionals in the community development field. The dedication served as a call to action for all of us to embrace the role of mentor and to uplift those around us, just as Ned had done. In doing so, we can continue the tradition of mentorship, building a stronger, more connected community of professionals who are dedicated to making a difference in the world.

Over the course of my 15-year career, the NCDA has not only provided me with valuable educational resources and professional development opportunities but has also connected me with a network of extraordinary individuals who have become cherished friends and colleagues. The members and staff of the NCDA have created a welcoming and inclusive community, fostering collaboration and camaraderie among professionals in the field of community development. Through conferences, workshops, and networking events, I have had the privilege of forging deep connections with like-minded individuals who share my passion for making a positive impact in our communities.

As I reflect on the Spring Region 1 Conference, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the countless mentors who have played a significant role in my journey. The NCDA's commitment to mentorship and its dedication to recognizing the achievements of its members exemplify the organization's core values and the positive influence it has on individuals in the field of community development.

As we look towards the future, I am excited to see the continued impact of the NCDA and the remarkable connections it will foster for future generations. I am grateful to be a part of this vibrant community and eagerly anticipate the next 50 years of the NCDA's commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and community development.
